The Environmental League of Massachusetts Action Fund PAC has endorsed Representative Byron Rushing of Boston in the election for the 9th Suffolk State Representative district, a credit to his commitment to the environment.
“Representative Rushing has been a passionate advocate for building healthier and more sustainable communities,” stated ELM Action Fund Executive Director Joe O’Brien. “He knows that Boston and cities and towns across the state must address the challenges of global warming by investing in a clean energy future that will create jobs and reduce carbon emissions.”
“Throughout his career, Representative Rushing has prioritized protecting public spaces that we all enjoy, such as the Common and Public Garden,” said ELM Action Fund President Elizabeth Henry. “As co-chair of the House of Representative Progressive Caucus he has worked to improve the health of Massachusetts residents and to address environmental justice issues in his district and across the Commonwealth.”
Representative Rushing has secured regular funding for the Boston Groundwater Trust, and partners with community groups to ensure that Boston’s public sites do not lose their historic character despite the city’s ongoing building boom. He played a key role in advocating for the initial development of the silver line of the MBTA, and continues to support efforts to improve its performance and ensure access to public transportation.
Prior to his election as a state legislator, Representative Rushing worked two decades as a community organizer and advocate helping to create one of the nation’s first community development corporations. He later was the President of the Boston’s Museum of African American History that restored the city’s historic African Meeting House – the oldest remaining black church in the United States. Having been first elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1982, he is now the highest-ranking black official in the Legislature, and a member of the House leadership team. As a State Representative, he has championed issues ranging from marriage equality to civil rights, affordable housing, and community safety.
